How Long Should the Month-End Close Take?

There is no single right number. A small business with clean records can close in a few working days; a multi-entity business usually needs longer. What matters is that the close finishes on the same working day every month and gets faster each quarter. Agree a target day, write down the steps and owners, and track slippage. Use the free close checklist to set it up.

What decides the speed

  • Quality of the records at the start: bank feeds, coded transactions, timely supplier invoices
  • Number of entities, currencies and intercompany balances
  • Whether the team works from a checklist with owners and deadlines
  • How many adjustments (accruals, depreciation, prepayments) are manual

A practical timetable to start from

  • Working day 1: cut-off checks for sales and purchases, download statements
  • Working day 2: bank reconciliations, receivables review, supplier statements
  • Working day 3: payroll, depreciation, accruals, inventory
  • Working day 4: tax, loan and intercompany reconciliations, trial balance review
  • Working day 5: financial statements, variance commentary, sign-off

This is an example. Adjust it to your business.

How to shorten it

  • Do routine tasks during the month, not after it: weekly bank reconciliation, weekly invoice entry
  • Set a supplier invoice cut-off date and tell suppliers
  • Standardise journals and recurring entries
  • Fix the same error at its source when it repeats
  • Close earlier on a rough basis, then refine

What to measure

Track the working day each close finishes, the number of adjustments after sign-off, and the number of late tasks. Review them each quarter and set the next target.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a month-end close take?

It depends on size, complexity and record quality. Agree a fixed working day for delivery, write it down and tighten it each quarter.

What is a good first target?

Many small businesses start by aiming to finish within five working days and then improve. Choose a target that is realistic for your team.

Does a faster close mean lower quality?

No, if the checklist and reconciliations stay in place. Speed comes from doing routine tasks earlier, not skipping them.
