Investor-Ready Financial Model: What to Include
An investor-ready financial model is a three-statement model (profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow) with clearly labelled assumptions, scenarios and a summary page. It should reconcile, use consistent formulas, and let an investor change one assumption and see the result. Build it on clean historical numbers, keep the story simple and show how much funding you need, what it is used for and how long it lasts.
Structure
- Cover and contents
- Assumptions sheet: all inputs in one place (blue cells)
- Revenue and cost build-ups
- Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow that link and balance
- Funding and use of funds
- Summary and charts
Assumptions that matter
- Pricing, volume and growth drivers
- Gross margin and cost behaviour (fixed vs variable)
- Hiring plan and payroll
- Working capital: debtor days, creditor days, inventory
- Capex and depreciation
- Tax and financing terms
Scenarios
Show a base case, a downside and an upside, and the few assumptions that move the result most. State the runway under each scenario.
Checks investors apply
- Does the balance sheet balance every period?
- Does cash tie to the cash flow statement?
- Are historical numbers reconciled to the accounts?
- Are the growth assumptions supported by evidence?
- Is the funding ask linked to milestones?
Common mistakes
- Hardcoded numbers inside formulas
- Growth with no matching working capital or hiring
- Ignoring tax and loan repayments
- A model nobody on the team can update
