Oman VAT Return Checklist for Startups

Before you file an Oman VAT return, confirm that every sale and purchase for the quarter is recorded with the right VAT treatment, reconcile your VAT control account to the return workings, check that invoices meet the rules, and file and pay by the due date. The tax period is a calendar quarter and the return and any VAT due are due by the 30th day of the month after the quarter ends.

Before you start

  • Confirm you are registered and your quarter dates
  • Close the books for all three months
  • Gather sales and purchase listings from your accounting system

Sales (output VAT)

  • All taxable sales included, split by standard-rated (5%), zero-rated and exempt
  • Credit notes applied in the right period
  • Tax invoices issued in Arabic (English is allowed with an Arabic translation on request) within 15 days of the supply
  • Advance payments treated correctly

Purchases (input VAT)

  • Input VAT claimed only with a valid tax invoice
  • Non-deductible items excluded
  • Reverse charge: services from a non-registered non-resident supplier are accounted for by you (box 2b of the return) and normally deductible if used for taxable supplies

Reconcile and check

  • Reconcile the VAT control account in the ledger to the return totals
  • Review large or unusual items
  • Check the prior quarter's closing position and any corrections
  • Have a second person review the return

File and pay

  • File the return and pay any VAT due by the 30th day of the month after the quarter ends
  • When the due date falls on a weekend, file and pay by the last working day before it
  • Keep the filing confirmation and workings together
